Newby News

Newby gains experience and good data after round 4 of the ANDRA Pro Series Top Alcohol Championship.

A monumental effort was put in by all of the team to just get the car ready to race for the event held at Sydney Dragway on the weekend. With the shortest time between rounds in sometime, the crew had to pull out all the stops to make the event, but make it they did, and with a great deal of enthusiasm.

The new funny car presented well with new paint job and branding, and drew a lot of attention from the media at the event. All eyes were on Wayne to see how he coped with the transition from dragster to funny car and whilst some would say that is a fair step all would agree Wayne took it in his stride.

With only three previous runs in the car, and those only testing and not at race standard, a lot was riding on the three rounds of qualifying on Saturday afternoon. For the first qualifier the car was run with a deliberate soft tune, enabling Wayne a chance to get a feel for both the car and the track. Round 2 being their first real attempt at qualifying was unfortunately undermined when the car wouldn’t go into top gear leaving the team on the bump spot, and even more determined to make the third qualifier count.

The crew worked hard to turn the car around before round 3, completely rebuilding the gearbox and changing the clutch plates. Problems during fire up resulted in the changing of the coil. Whilst the team had a replacement coil Wayne would like to thank Rick Gauci for the use of his tried and tested one, enabling them to make the third qualifier.

With a fair amount of determination, Wayne ran a solid 5.834 seconds at 230.17 mph to claim his spot in eliminations on Sunday. Round 1 of eliminations put Wayne up against fellow funny car driver, Gary Phillips. As sometimes how these things go, a failed kill switch prevented the car from starting on the line; such a small thing can create such a big issue at a crucial moment. Gary caught a lucky break, having smoked the tyres, however at the Winternationals it will take more than luck to take the tree.

After the event Wayne had this to say “It will still take some seat time before I am fully comfortable with the car, but it is feeling good and I am feeling confident. It is a whole new learning curve for the team, every one of us has to make adjustments, but it is all going well and we got some fantastic data and good results so far”.

Only 58 points separates Wayne from the top spot in the championship, so it is still all out there for the taking at the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway in June. We know you all wish Wayne the best and we look forward to seeing him race the event.

Adelaide International Raceway Claims the JBS Jet
Friday, 20th April 2012

Gremlins & other Set backs didn’t stop the Newby Race Team Making the final at the Adelaide Pro Series 1000 last weekend.

The team struggled to tame the dragster down to handle the Adelaide track, and with this and other mishaps along the way, qualifying into the field proved to be a challenge.

A lucky break on Saturday night saw the team make it into the field at #8, and they had managed to collect enough data to see the dragster finally put in a good run down the track. With a great reaction time and drive from Wayne, he managed to defeat Debbie O’Rourke in the first round.

Round 2 saw Dragster V Dragster as Wayne took on Adam Marchant. This was a crowd pleaser as the dragsters put on a side by side run with Wayne taking the win with a 5.043 against Adams 5.099.

In the final the team knew they had to pull out all the stops to beat John Cannuli’s 4.89 second semi finals pass. Sadly it was not to be, with Wayne hitting the wall at the finish line, all but destroying the dragster, and the win went to Cannuli. “When I saw John run the 4.89 second in the semi finals I knew we had to step it up, and we went a bit too far. No excuses, I just drove it to the max” he said.

“We would like to say a huge Thank You to everyone for their support on the weekend after the accident, especially to our fellow Drag Racers for helping to ‘pick up the pieces’. They all rallied around to help the boys get the car from the track back to the pits. Rick Gauci and his crew re-arranged their trailer to accommodate the dragster to bring her home which was a huge effort. The Cannuli’s fed us all and everyone came to check on us and to see if they could help us out. Really, I can’t say enough to thank everyone. We feel very privileged to have such good friends”.

With only one point separating Wayne from first place in the championship points, the Nitro Champs promise to be very exciting indeed for more reasons than one. Newby Top Alcohol set to invade Adelaide this weekend
Wednesday, 11 April 2012

For the first time in over a decade, Andra Pro Series Top Alcohol will be racing at Adelaide International Raceway this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It has certainly been a long time between runs for the Newby Racing Team and they are itching to get out on the track on Friday. The car is on the way and the crew are all set to follow, the excitement of the road trip is building, made all the more exciting by heading to a venue not previously included in the Andra Pro Series.

Wayne and the crew have been making the most of the downtime, with the car fully refreshed and a newly designed clutch package in place. The car has been cleaned and is ready to roll, with the crew aiming for a good position in the qualifying order. Wayne even managed to find some time to compare the horse power over the weekend at Rosehill.

With a full field expected some tight races and good times should result in what promises to be a great weekend. There are blue skies with no clouds in South Australia now and the weather is predicted to favour some good times being run.
“It’s always a little more exciting travelling to an event and good to race at different tracks, I am really looking forward to the trip. I would like to thank JBS and all of our sponsors, this trip would not be possible without their continuing support, they have made it all possible and we hope to do them proud,” said Wayne.

If you haven’t already joined the JBS/Newby Racing facebook page, now is the perfect time, with Allie promising to keep us all up to date with all the weekends happens. “Like” it here.  I am sure you will all join us in wishing Newby Racing all the best for the weekend and we look forward to providing you an update after qualifying.

Perth Motorplex ready for a Newby Top Alcohol invasion
Wednesday, 16 November 2011

The JBS Jet is already on the way and the team are starting to get excited. It has been two years since Newby Racing last made the trip to Perth and the anticipation is building.

Perth Motorplex is getting ready for the East Coast invasion this weekend as Top Alcohol heads west to the 40th Annual Golden States this Friday and Saturday. Thanks to the fantastic extra support provided by JBS, Newby Racing is set to join them.

The weekend weather looks great and the team are well rested and rearing to go after the break since the Australian Nationals in Sydney in September. With no recent data to go by, they will be making every pass count from qualifying on Friday, through to eliminations on Saturday.

“I am really looking forward to the trip, it is always good to race at different tracks. I would like to thank JBS, this trip would not be possible without their additional support, they have made it all possible and we hope to do them proud,” said Wayne.

This is a chance for Wayne to race against the WA guys on their home turf, some of which don’t often travel interstate. Seven of the eleven competitors in the bracket are from Western Australia, so the victory would be all the sweeter for an East Coast winner this weekend.

Wayne has his bags packed and is heading west on Thursday and he only has one thing on his mind, the race ahead. The likable racer is sure to be a big hit with the Perth racing fans, with his ready smile and easy going personality he is popular with racers and fans alike.

I am sure you will all join us in wishing Newby Racing all the best for the weekend and we look forward to providing you an update after qualifying on Friday night.

Rain could not dampen the celebration for Newby Racing
Tuesday, 19 July 2011

Despite the incomplete end to the second running of the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway Newby Racing are celebrating, and with good reason.

Rain all day Saturday put paid to Wayne’s hope of improving his number two qualifying position, with all remaining qualifying rounds abandoned in favour of all eliminations on Sunday.

Race day saw blue skies in the morning and despite the late start following track drying, a fairly incident free day meant the schedule was only slightly affected.
Round one of Top Alcohol eliminations saw Wayne paired against Debbie O’Rourke. It all came down to reaction time in this extremely tight race, Wayne running a 5.672 at 250.55mph to defeat Debbie running a 5.673 at 249.12mph.

When a starter problem threatened to prematurely end Wayne’s chances in the semi-final it was truly heartening to see Ben Bray and Aaron Hambridge run to the team’s aid with starters in hand. Wayne and the crew would like to thank both Ben and Aaron for their quick response and sportsmanship, which is what sets drag racing apart from so many other sports, the willingness for competitors to lend a helping hand, often at a critical moment.

However the lack of qualifying rounds took its toll as the team had only the data from the one run to determine the set up for the car. Unable to get the correct car/clutch/conditions set up for the semi-final resulted in Wayne shaking the tyres and himself, giving the win to Stephen Ham.

Despite the disappointment the team still had reason to celebrate for Newby Racing can now be officially declared the winners of the 2010/2011 Championship Season for ANDRA Pro Series Top Alcohol, adding yet another Gold Christmas Tree to the already well stocked trophy case.

This very likable racer and team were certainly not short of people visiting the pits to congratulate them on their much deserved win. Their consistency throughout the year has been attributed to a great working team, fantastic fan support, and terrific sponsors who continually show Newby Racing tremendous support in helping to get the job done.

So despite the event finishing without the usual ceremony, the Newby Team still have a great reason to smile as they take a well deserved break until the beginning of the new season at the Australian Nationals at Sydney Dragway in September.

The wait is almost over for Newby Racing
Thursday, 14 July 2011

Following the disappointment of the rained out Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway in June the team has been marking time for the re-run and it is almost here.

Despite being first in the points for the Top Alcohol Championship, Wayne Newby still won’t hear of any celebrating the 2010/2011 Championship until after the racing is done. He takes the whole season one round at a time and that is the focus that has seen the team be so consistent throughout the season.

After the wash out the team returned to Sydney slightly downhearted but in the interim have pulled down the engine, given it a service, topped it up with Redline Oil and filled it with VP Race Fuel, the JBS toolbox Is on the truck and they are ready to do it all again this weekend. Top Alcohol’s third round of qualifying will be at 12:40pm on Saturday and Wayne would like to improve on his already impressive second place qualifying position.

The team are all pumped and eager to finish the event in the winner’s circle. “It is not the same to win the Championship without winning the final round at the Winternationals”, said Wayne and that is what all of the team is aiming for.

With a great supporter base for not only the team but also for this very likable racer and fantastic support from the Team’s sponsors we all wish Wayne the very best for this weekend and look forward to seeing him receive his trophy at the end of the event.

So the drinks will be on ice and the barbecue at the ready for the celebration at the end of the meeting, which will be all the sweeter if they can add two Gold Christmas Trees to their already impressive trophy cabinet. Stay tuned for updates after qualifying…..

Excitement is building at Newby Racing
Friday, 3 June 2011

There is a buzz in the air at Newby Racing in anticipation of the Season Final at the Castrol Edge Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway next weekend.

Currently number 1 in the Top Alcohol 2010/2011 Championship it would be easy to be complacent going into the final round of the season. However, the entire team if focused on the Winternationals, and they all have their eyes on the ultimate prize. “It is not the same to win the Championship without winning the event” said Wayne. “There is nothing better than finishing the season on that positive note.”

Throughout the season the team has been consistent, with only minor adjustments throughout the year, seeing them into seven finals in a row. It has proven to be a reliable package, with consistency paying dividends, but nothing is being taken for granted in the lead up to the final round. The car has been checked, the bags are packed and the crew are getting excited. Bring on the Winternationals!

With 14 entries competition will be fierce for a spot in the eliminations. Every qualifier will count as teams aim to start the rounds on the top of the qualifying ladder. With two rounds of qualifying on Saturday afternoon there is no room for error as no one wants to be on the outside looking in at the end of qualifying on Sunday.

So the drinks will be on ice and the barbecue at the ready for the celebration at the end of the event, which will be all the sweeter if they can add two Gold Christmas Trees to their already impressive trophy cabinet. Stay tuned for updates after qualifying…..

Wayne Newby would like to sincerely thank the entire team and our valued sponsors JBS Tools, Fabre Australia, Smithfield Diff and Gear, Coldy's Tow & Bullbars, Redline Oils, VP Racing Fuels, Mick's Metal Craft, CRC Industries and Newby Engineering for their continued support, without whom racing would not be possible.

Newby hard to beat for the 2010/2011 Top Alcohol Championship
Wedesday, 4 May, 2011

Wayne Newby secured a place in his seventh final in a row at Sydney Dragway’s Nitro Champs on the weekend, making him almost unbeatable for the 2010/2011 Top Alcohol Championship title.

The weather gods tried their hardest to bring an early end to the Nitro Champs but persistence paid dividends in the end. Teams and track officials all persevered through showers on Friday which put paid to Top Alcohol’s first qualifying round due to run on Friday night.

Top qualifying, straight off the trailer, with a first round run of 5.647 at 250.51mph, Newby set the standard for the field. With only minor changes made between championship rounds it seems the team have found the right combination that has put them in first place in the championship season.

The sun was out for eliminations on Sunday much to the relief of all participants. First round saw Wayne line up against Steven Ham in the Pontiac Funnycar. Wayne took the round with a solid run of 5.72 at 240.55mph against Ham’s red light and 5.755 run.

Steven Reed in the Camaro Funnycar cut a bad light in round two to run a 5.982 at 224.85mph against Wayne’s winning run of 5.676 at 250.09mph, setting Wayne up to meet John Cannuli in the final. Cannuli ran consistently all day and was always going to be a tough beat.

The final was delayed due to track incidents and the colder night air saw the Newby car overstep the mark giving Cannuli the win. Second place, however, gave the Newby Team 88 points for the event, putting them in first place in the championship with 328 points.

The entire Newby team has done a magnificent job this season, with the car running consistently well, earning them first place in the series points.

With such a strong lead going into the final round at the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway in June, Wayne will certainly be a tough one to beat. All in all a great weekend of racing without major incidents for the team and a good stage for the launch of major sponsor, JBS, who debuted their new Master Series Tool Range.

Wayne Newby would like to thank the entire team and our valued sponsors JBS Tools, Fabre Australia, Smithfield Diff and Gear, Coldy's Tow & Bullbars, Redline Oils, VP Racing Fuels, Mick's Metal Craft, CRC Industries and Newby Engineering for their continued support, without whom racing would not be possible.

Rain brings an abrupt end to Round One of the New Year Series
Tuesday, 4 January, 2011

Top Alcohol were ready to roll when the skies opened, bringing an end to Round One of the New Year Series at Willowbank Raceway on the weekend.

Three rounds of qualifying on Sunday saw Wayne in third position for the elimination rounds on Monday afternoon. He was scheduled to face Stephen Ham in the Funny Car at around 5:30pm. It had been a hot and humid day and rain was always on the cards. It held off all day and fingers were crossed the rain would pass Willowbank by again as it had on Sunday.

As the Top Alcohol cars waited in the staging lanes for Top Fuel to finish their runs the clouds closed in and a sudden down pour brought an abrupt end to the event. With two hours required for track clean up once the rain had stoped, and a full schedule still to run, Willowbank Management made the decision to call the event, sending everyone home early, with no result.

Having ironed out the issue with the push rod adjusters in the first two rounds of qualifying, the Newby Team were ready to race and eager to take home the prize. Instead they will have to look forward to round 4 of the championship at the Nitro Champs at Sydney Dragway on the 29th and 30th April and the 1st of May. With only four championship points separating Wayne and the leader of the Top Alcohol Championship, it will definitely be an event to make sure you bring your game.

Newby qualifies third in an eventful first day at Willowbank Raceway Round One of the New Year Series
Monday, 3 January, 2011

Hot weather and great racing for the qualifying sessions of Top Alcohol at Willowbank Raceway for Round 1 of the New Year Series.

Despite the threat of thunderstorms, and rain falling in neighbouring areas, the first day of the New Year Series Round 1 was not rain affected as predicted. Instead the temperatures soared and the day saw some strong qualifying runs for all brackets.

Track conditions were hot in the extreme for the first round of qualifying which saw Wayne paired against Gary Phillips in the funny car. Wayne ran a respectable pass of 5.79 at 244mph to Gary’s 6.25 at 221mph, temporarily giving Newby the top qualifying position.

Unfortunately a subsequent qualifying run (Rick Gauci/Debbie Reed) saw Debbie hit the wall on both sides of the track, destroying her dragster in the process. The entire Newby Racing Team wishes all the best to Debbie Reed and her family at this time.

By the second round of qualifying the temperature had dropped considerably but humidity remained high, making tune ups a challenge. Newby paired against Gauci for a 5.81 at 241mph to Rick’s 6.38 at 171mph.

In both of the first two qualifying runs the engine broke push rod adjusters, causing it to run on only seven cylinders. This issue was fixed for the third round and resulted in Wayne running a 5.79 at 245 mph to take the third qualifying spot in a fiercely contested field. The team is really positive about the result and look forward to some great racing today.

Top Alcohol eliminations are scheduled to start at 5.30pm and the first round will see Wayne paired against Steven Ham in the funny car. At present the temperatures as still quite warm at the track producing challenging conditions for racing. We look forward to seeing the Newby Racing Team in the winners circle at the end of the event.

Newby set to start the New Year with a win
Friday, 31 December 2010

Newby New Colours.jpg

Hot off a win in the last round at Sydney Dragway in October, Newby Racing is pumped for the New Year Series round 1 at Willowbank Raceway this weekend.

The team have enjoyed some well deserved down time since their winning result in October and have come back refreshed and ready to take on the Top Alcohol field this weekend. A twelve car field will ensure some close racing to qualify for the eight spots on race day.

After ironing out the kinks to take the win in October, in what Wayne described as the “weekend from hell”, the team is ready to follow up with a win on Monday. With fingers crossed for good racing weather, teams will be chasing the good numbers in qualifying to ensure a top place in the field.

Confident with the current set up, Wayne and the team have not made any significant changes during the break, preferring to rest and recharge over the Christmas period. With the driver and crew already enjoying the Queensland sunshine (at last) everything is in place to truly bring in the New Year with a bang.

With only three points between Wayne and first place on the Top Alcohol ladder, Wayne is looking to gain first position with a win in the 3rd Round of the Top Alcohol Championship. The weekend is set to be action packed and we look forward to bringing you a further updates after Sunday’s qualifying sessions.

Score one in the win column for Newby Racing
Sunday, 31 October 2010

Described by Wayne Newby as the “weekend from hell” the entire Newby Team worked together to turn troubles to triumph with a win at Sydney Dragway on Sunday.

In the final round of qualifying on Saturday night a problem which resulted in an engine fire mid track requiring a total engine change. “We isolated the issue to a small aluminium splinter that blocked the injector which caused it to run lean and torch the heads in qualifying” said Crew Chief Anthony Lavorato. “Working into the early hours of Sunday morning, the entire crew put in an enormous effort to turn the car around for the first round of eliminations. Everyone just knuckled down, no complaints, and worked together to get the job done.”

Round one saw Newby paired with Madill in the Dodge Charger. Madill smoked the tyres and almost tagged the wall, just the break needed for Newby to go through to the semis after blowing the gearbox during the run. A fantastic reaction time saw Wayne defeated Gary Phillips in the second round with a 5.661 at 250.60 mph to Phillip’s 5.658 at 255.58 mph.

In what seemed like déjà vu, Newby faced Hambridge in the final. By then running on adrenalin, the crew put in another massive effort to get the car turned around. The race was won from the start, with Hambridge smoking the tyres on the line. Newby sailed through for a good finish with a 5.669 at 248.75 mph.

Anthony Lavorato had this to say after the run “This weekend was all about the crew” said Anthony “but the driver got us through to the final, he did a fantastic drive job to peddle it through in a close finish. All the crew would like to thank our wives and families for their understanding this weekend. We could not do it without their support.”

“We continue to make changes, and all the changes have had a positive effect. We are looking forward to our next round at Willowbank in the New Year Series Round 1 on 2nd & 3rd of January” said Anthony. All things considered a massive effort paid reward, Newby Racing took home the trophy in a much deserved win.

The pressure is on but Newby are up to the challenge
Saturday, 30 October 2010

Newby New Colours.jpg

Qualifying day is now just a memory, a memory some teams would prefer to put behind them. After three rounds of racing the qualifying order has Wayne Newby in second spot followed by a closely bunched field.

Despite the team’s best efforts, burning the midnight oil on Friday night, the new motor was not quite ready to run. Setting aside the disappointment, the team met the challenge of qualifying head on. The third round gave them their best result with Wayne running a 5.712 at 241.76mph. The result came with a price, with a gasket problem resulting in an engine fire mid track.

No strangers to being under pressure, the crew will be burning the midnight oil again tonight.  A complete engine change is required to ensure they are ready to race in the first round against 7th qualifier Paul Madill in the Dodge Charger. With a deadline of 12 noon you can guarantee all hands will be on deck to get the car ready.

The entire team thrive under pressure, and we fully expect to see them in the winners circle at 5:30pm today.

Newby Racing burn the midnight oil in advance of a big weekend

Friday, 29 October 2010

This weekend marks a new round of the Top Alcohol championship and the Newby Racing Team will be leaving nothing to chance. With a reduced field of eight, qualifying is almost assured, but the competition will be great to be top qualifier. On the back of a great result at the Fuchs Australian Nationals in September Wayne is pumped to follow it with a win this weekend.

In between rounds Newby Engineering have developed a new engine and the whole crew will be burning the midnight oil tonight to make sure it is ready for the first round of qualifying at 2pm tomorrow. Being under pressure is nothing new to the team though, having had to replace an entire engine between the semi finals and finals of the last round.

With all hands on deck to get the new look car ready for racing Wayne took a brief time out to give his views on the coming race meeting. “The new body feels great, really comfortable and much smoother than the old one. Despite the reduced field this weekend the competition will still be fierce. Every team wants to get an early lead in the championship.”

With the fine tuning still to come on the new engine, Newby Racing will be looking forward to gathering some valuable data in the first few rounds. With a proven track record we are sure the team will do well and we expect to see them in the winners circle at the end of the weekend. One thing for sure, the entire Newby Team will be bringing their game for an action packed weekend.

Wayne Newby would like to thank the entire team and our valued sponsors JBS Tools, Fabre Australia, Smithfield Diff and Gear, Coldy's Tow & Bullbars, Redline Oils, VP Racing Fuels, Mick's Metal Craft and Newby Engineering for their continued support, without whom racing would not be possible.

Newby in New Colours takes second at season opener

Monday, 13 September 2010

The opening round of the season is now all run and done, and what a round it was. After a slow start on Friday due to rain, the rest of the weekend was what has been described as the Upset Nationals and Top Alcohol was no exception. With top qualifier Gary Phillips going out in the first round due to massive tyre shake, it left the field wide open for the Newby Team.

In the first round of eliminations Wayne ran a personal best of 5.57 to take out Rick Gauci in the City Finance Funny Car. Rick was disappointed to have his weekend come to an early finish but could be seen on the track supporting the Newby Team in their remaining runs.

The semi final matched Newby against Steven Ham in the ECL Funny Car. Ham had an issue from the start paving the way for Newby to take the run with a 5.916 at 203mph. Unfortunately the car was running lean and the heads were torched, leaving the crew with the huge job of changing the entire engine before the finals.

They put in a massive effort and were able to get the car turned around in time for the final against Aaron Hambridge. “Wayne cut a good light”, said crew chief Anthony Lavorato. “Unfortunately the car banged the blower off” and the rest is history. Despite the damage to the engine Newby ran a 5.68 at 226mph to Aaron’s 5.60 at 251mph for a close finish.

Whilst a win in the opening round would have been great, the Newby Team will settle for second…..this time.  “It has been a terrific weekend and the car seems to be running consistently, and looks great. A big thank you to the staff at Sydney Dragway, they have done a great job this weekend and deserve to be acknowledged” said Anthony. So watch out at the Sydney Dragway for Round 2 of the Andra Pro Series on 30th and 31st October.

Get better soon Mick, falling off the back of the truck and hurting your arm on setup day is not a good way to enjoy the event.

New Season, New Colours for Newby Team

11th September, 2010

The opening round of the new Andra Pro Series is always awaited with anticipation as many teams use the off-season to fine tune or revamp their cars. The Newby team are no exception, using the off season to do a little tinkering and to give the car a new lease on life. The JBS Jet has come into the first round of the 2010-2011 season ready for action in its new colours. It has quite an impact on the track sporting a new body nicely finished in blue, red and white.

The final day of qualifying for the Fuchs Australian Nationals at Sydney Dragway started well and continue that way throughout the day. The skies were bright and clear and the large crowd enjoyed a full day of drag racing. After the final qualifier for Top Alcohol the Newby team had improved their position from fourth to second with a 5.574 at 250.37mph.

In the first round of eliminations, on Sunday at 12:20pm, Newby will face Rick Gauci in the City Finance Top Alcohol Funny Car. Neither one has any intention of going home early so a great race is assured.

The field is looking very tight with everyone wearing their game face. Competition will be fierce to make the final as there is something special about winning the opening event of the season. Newby is determined to better his second place finish in the final round of the 2009-2010 season at Willowbank in June.

"JBS Jet" Runner Up at Castrol Edge Winternationals 2010

16th June, 2010

The excitement builds for the final round of the Andra Pro Series Championship at Willowbank Raceway, with all the teams wanting to end the season on a winning note. It is the icing on the cake for the season.

The first day of qualifying for group one at the Winternationals started quite cold, but warmed up by the time Top Alcohol hit the track at 2pm. The Newby Racing Team took top speed in the first qualifier, running 253.75mph. After the second qualifier at 5:20pm, Newby was in the field with a 5.678 second pass.

The third round of qualifying at 1pm on Saturday saw Newby run a 5.647 at 253.9mph. It was not enough to improve in the qualifying order but enough to keep him in the field. With some hard runs the bump spot for the final qualifying session was set at 5.665, with five teams on the outside looking in.

Aaron Hambridge set the bar high in the final qualifier, running a 5.519 making the new bump spot an extremely tight 5.662. The field set, with Newby in seventh position, on Sunday the team had to pull out all the stops for any chance of victory.

True to form Newby Racing pulled out all the stops in the first elimination, taking out Gary Phillips with a 5.607 second pass. Dean Oakey had issues which gave the Newby team a bye in the semi finals, lining him up against Aaron Hambridge for the final.

Despite a .016 reaction time from Wayne, Aaron Hambridge took the win with a 5.56 at 256.5mph. It was a great effort by the Newby Racing crew to turn the teams fortunes around from the elimination rounds, unfortunately on this occasion they had to settle for second, however getting to the final ensured the team third place in the Championship. Congratulations to Aaron Hambridge for a good win.

Newby set to be a spoiler at the 2010 Winternationals

9th June, 2010

With the Castrol Edge Winternationals fast approaching, excitement is starting to build among the competing teams.   The event is the ultimate finish to the 2009-2010 season, and whilst the Top Alcohol Championship may be almost completely stitched up, the winner for the Winternationals is far from being decided.

The Newby Team, along with many others will be making their way to Willowbank this week with only one thing in mind, taking home that gold Christmas tree as the winner of the Winternationals.  Competition will be fierce through all rounds of qualifying and eliminations, and nothing will be left to chance.   Other than a few minor tweaks between rounds the “JBS Jet” has been left pretty much as it was for its winning round at the Nitro Champs in Sydney back in May.

“The weather is not really a factor” said Wayne “as all teams will be racing in the same conditions.  It will come down to the tune up.”  Of course the driver has more than a little to do with it.  With Wayne’s experience in the cockpit he will definitely be a force to be reckoned with, particularly as his recent taste of winning has left him with a thirst for more.

The first round of qualifying for Top Alcohol will be mid-afternoon on Friday with second round later that evening.  The third and fourth rounds of qualifying are set down for Saturday afternoon.  These will set the tone for eliminations, to be run on Sunday morning.  A full on day is promised for race day, with all three rounds of eliminations to be run between 10am and 4pm.  The final will surely be one to watch for this hotly contested trophy.  We don’t have any doubt Wayne and the Newby Team have exactly what it takes to win.

Stay tuned for more news after qualifying.

Newby Takes the Karcher Nitro Champs Trophy

4th May, 2010

Congratulations go to Wayne Newby for a fantastic effort in winning the Karcher Nitro Champs at Sydney Dragway on the weekend.

Wayne was quietly confident leading into the event and as usual took it one run at a time. After qualifying second Wayne met John Cannuli in the first round. Cannuli had some issues, and with a time of 5.752 Wayne went through to meet Dean Oakey in round 2.

Round 2 saw a much closer race, with Wayne running a 5.675 at 249.12 to Oakey's 5.692 at 246.12, setting Wayne up against the current number one, Gary Phillips, for the final round.

With his best reaction time of the elimination rounds of 0.034, Wayne got a jump on Gary with his reaction of 0.178. Despite a lower MPH of 251.72 to Gary's 253.99 Wayne was first over the line in a very intense race.

The result is a welcome one for Wayne and the Newby Racing Team and they are now setting their minds and sights on the Castrol Winternationals at Willowbank in June.

Newby has his eye on the prize at the Nitro Champs

29th April, 2010

After the disappointment of the rained out Summer Nationals at Sydney Dragway in February, Wayne Newby is anxious to get back on the track at the Nitro Champs this weekend.

The “JBS Jet” has had a chance to put some runs down the track since the Summer Nationals, to get some valuable data.  With a strong field on the weekend, every run will count and some great times will be needed to take out the trophy.  Teams will need everything in their arsenal to make it to the final round and the Newby Team will be giving it all they’ve got.

The current point standings have Gary Phillips on 288 points, John Cannuli on 255, Aaron Hambridge on 200, Steven Ham on 188, Adam Marchant on 180, Dean Oakey on 145 and Wayne Newby on 140 points.  A big win this weekend will go a long way to closing the gap before the final round at Willowbank in June.

As usual, Wayne will be taking every race as it comes but he definitely has his eye on the prize this weekend.  The weather looks good and the team is in great shape, so bring on the racing, they are definitely ready to run. Stay tuned for more news after qualifying.

"JBS Jet" Ready for Take Off at Summer Nationals

9th February, 2010

The Newby Top Alcohol Team is ready to race and feeling confident, having made it to the finals at the Australian Nationals, which was the last time they ran the car.

In the off season they have taken a break from the car to give them a little distance and to regroup and re-gather. With a few changes to the car, they hope to pick up the performance on the track for the meeting next week.

Confident the current set up is the one, the team won't be testing again before the Summer Nationals. Wayne acknowledges it will be a tough field, with all the usual Top Alcohol teams coming along, and everyone on their game.

With such a quality field it will take consistent 5.6 second times at 250 plus mph to make the cut. Some extremely close racing can be expected.

Wayne hopes to get a tan with the nice sunny weather he has ordered for the event, but aside from that, the team only has one thing in its sights, and that is to take home the trophy at the end of the meet. Stay tuned for more news after qualifying.
